Few may argue that a liberal arts education is useless because it has nothing to do with STEM. But in reality, STEM is the new, big path to follow if you are looking for a good education. “STEM graduates, as well as those from Accounting programs, learned actual skills in their studies. Humanities majors learned only “soft skills” like writing, and “critical thinking”. All useless majors teach the same “soft skills” (2) is the respond of Steven Waechter. While it is very true that STEM teaches skills, it doesn’t necessarily help students for their future in the long term. For example, STEM does not teach students about citizenship, writing, and critical thinking. These skills are important for a student’s future but also in order to succeed so it’s not a bad idea to major in humanities in the long run. Waechter supports one of the misperceptions that Sanford J Ungar describes as “One should not, in this day and age, study only the arts. The STEM fields…are where the action is” (2). There is actually a lot of action in both studies. There is nothing wrong with majoring in the humanities or in the STEM field. Both fields lead to great success for the future. And at the end of the day it is all about what they want to make out of there lives and hopefully they choose the right one.
