Homework November 20

1  Boyer claims that an enriched major “ encourages students not only to explore a field in-depth, but also to help them put their field of special study in perspective”. (Boyer)

2“The outcomes statements created by faculty showed that certain ways of doing were repeated in general terms across a variety of disciplines: responses to academic learning situations that call for problem-solving, for empirical inquiry, for research, from sources, and for performance.” (Carter)

3  “Through these hands-on courses, you’ll experience the best of what UNE has to offer: small class sizes, engaging faculty and an intellectual health sciences community,” (UNE)

4 “Assessment plans from fifty-one programs from all nine undergraduate colleges at my university”. (Carter)

Homework due 11/4

At the University of New England, the pre-pharmacy program is an enriched major. There offers a two-year, undergraduate program on the Biddeford Campus. This program provides you with the minimum coursework required for admission into the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program offered by UNE’s College of Pharmacy on the Portland Campus. An enriched major encourages “students not only to explore a field in-depth, but also to help them out their field of special study in perspective” according to Boyer. The pre-pharmacy program does want students to focus on the pharmacy studies however, students are expected to get many minors to explore their major in-depth. Students can explore other different areas of study so they can excel in the field.

Carter talks about four metagenres: problem-solving, empirical inquiry, research from resources, and call for performance. The EDU major can closely relate to the meta genre about empirical inquiry. This metagenre answers “questions by drawing conclusions from systematic investigation based on empirical data” (Carter, 396). EDU majors are taught about different types of learners and their development as well as the differences between learning environments. Through doing this, the EDU majors will be using previous data about the learning types and the development of students to help in their future job and within their fieldwork.

November 1 HW

To be honest the table was really hard to fill out. I couldn’t fill out a lot of the boxes because the topics had nothing to do with some of the passages we read. I’m not really sure how this is going to help me write the paper because I need a better understanding of what I needed to put on this table. I think I need more understanding of Michael Carter’s article because it’s all over the place. I did notice that Boyer and Scheuer/Ungar are somewhat connected but I needed more to truly connect them together but, some of their views are kind of similar. They basically both agree that it’s a liberal arts education VS. career-focused courses. They both understand that this is an issue. I wasn’t able to fill out a lot of the boxes for the major I chose. I’m not really sure why this is. The syllabus for the major didn’t include the history, social/economic implications, and/or the ethical/moral issues. The syllabus mostly talked about what students need to be able to do if they’re majoring in education.

October 28 HW

1 The central tension Boyer discusses in the reading is that college majors are becoming too job-related and they aren’t focusing on the liberal arts aspect of college education because it is not important to them. He explains, “The push toward career-related education has come to dominate most campuses” (Boyer). There has been a wave in a very specific education for a certain job. Boyer talks about how since this has started to increase, liberal arts have been looked over. He would argue that there needs to be more liberal arts aspects because if not students won’t be educated in other areas of life. With the big increase in career-related educations, it doesn’t help you when you go to get a job in that one area you’ve studied for so long.

2 Boyer’s goal is to have an enriched major. This major “explores a field in-depth, but also to help students put their field of special study in perspective”. His ideal goal is to put the vocational and liberal arts education combined. This type of major includes two of the most important parts of an education. Students will not only have a liberal arts education, but a major that relates to the work field. Which would allow them to be ready for the rest of their lives.

Intro Paragraph Revision

Original

Liberal Arts is a large field that encompasses a wide variety of majors, including literature, psychology, political science, philosophy, and more. If you are an international student who thinks that studying liberal arts in the United States might be for you, read on to learn more about this varied and rewarding field. Jeffrey Scheuer and Sanford Ungar each offer a defense of a liberal arts education for today’s students. For Scheuer, the argument involves introducing several conceptions of the liberal arts, the centrality of dimensions of citizenship, and a case for critical thinking. Ungar engages in a kind of myth-busting by organizing his points as responses to “misperceptions.” The “Core Handbook” introduces the CAS core values as well as the general curriculum required of all students in the college. Together, these texts open a space for us to make sense of the purpose of a liberal arts education in the context of our actual curriculum.

When applying for school where you looking to earn a degree that can prepare you for a wide variety of fields? Try considering a liberal arts education. The knowledge and skills you will gain with this kind of degree are valuable in any place you go, and they can prepare you to succeed in a career. Together, these texts open a space for us to make sense of the purpose of a liberal arts education in the context of our actual curriculum. And the best part about it is that it will always need to be there and will never get outdated.

What I did to improve my paper was make my claim more clearer and tidied up and sentences that felt as little bit week which i believed improved it.

At the University of New England, “you will benefit from an innovative common learning experience known as the Core Curriculum. The courses and events comprising the Core help you explore four different themes one during each undergraduate year from the perspectives of multiple disciplines.” Through this work, you gain a foundation in the liberal arts that prepares you for the complex challenges of our modern world. You also gain essential skills of critical thinking and communications that will help you achieve your educational goals no matter your field of study. According to Jeffrey Scheuer, a liberal arts education is a “wellspring of ideas and questions, and a way of promoting flexibility and openness to diverse perspectives” (3). Therefore if you were an undergraduate student at UNE who has a variety of ideas, questions, and flexibility employers will want what students have to offer when applying for jobs.

What I did to fix my paragraph was shortened the quote to get the same meaning and I made my sentences flow better.

Coordination and Subordination

Coordinating Sentences

You also gain essential skills of critical thinking and communications that will help you achieve your educational goals no matter your field of study.

Students should not only be able to understand different points of view and communicate correctly, but they “must also be prepared to enter the world engaged as local, national and global citizens and professionals” (4).

Critical Thinking develops the knowledge and skills students have mastered in their first two years while it teaches students to deal with complex problems and issues they confront in their upper-level major courses.

Subordinating Sentences

Therefore if you were an undergraduate student at UNE who has a variety of ideas, questions, and flexibility employers will want what students have to offer when applying for jobs.

October 21 HW

Few may argue that a liberal arts education is useless because it has nothing to do with STEM. But in reality, STEM is the new, big path to follow if you are looking for a good education. “STEM graduates, as well as those from Accounting programs, learned actual skills in their studies. Humanities majors learned only “soft skills” like writing, and “critical thinking”. All useless majors teach the same “soft skills” (2) is the respond of Steven Waechter. While it is very true that STEM teaches skills, it doesn’t necessarily help students for their future in the long term. For example, STEM does not teach students about citizenship, writing, and critical thinking. These skills are important for a student’s future but also in order to succeed so it’s not a bad idea to major in humanities in the long run. Waechter supports one of the misperceptions that Sanford J Ungar describes as “One should not, in this day and age, study only the arts. The STEM fields…are where the action is” (2). There is actually a lot of action in both studies. There is nothing wrong with majoring in the humanities or in the STEM field. Both fields lead to great success for the future. And at the end of the day it is all about what they want to make out of there lives and hopefully they choose the right one.

I am trying to attempt on how the liberal arts is applied to the University of New England and how it’ll benefit from using the liberal arts school. I feel like it stills needs a little work but I can get on that.
