1 The central tension Boyer discusses in the reading is that college majors are becoming too job-related and they aren’t focusing on the liberal arts aspect of college education because it is not important to them. He explains, “The push toward career-related education has come to dominate most campuses” (Boyer). There has been a wave in a very specific education for a certain job. Boyer talks about how since this has started to increase, liberal arts have been looked over. He would argue that there needs to be more liberal arts aspects because if not students won’t be educated in other areas of life. With the big increase in career-related educations, it doesn’t help you when you go to get a job in that one area you’ve studied for so long.

2 Boyer’s goal is to have an enriched major. This major “explores a field in-depth, but also to help students put their field of special study in perspective”. His ideal goal is to put the vocational and liberal arts education combined. This type of major includes two of the most important parts of an education. Students will not only have a liberal arts education, but a major that relates to the work field. Which would allow them to be ready for the rest of their lives.
